Routes of Rhythm Music Album 3

Producer Released by Rounder Records

About the album

Isaac Oviedo Routes of Rhythm Volume 3: Oviedo, legendary maestro of the tres guitar, is one of Cuba’s greatest musicians, appearing here on his first-ever U.S. album. These songs, recorded live by the filmmakers in Havana, are filled with the  euphoric lyrics, double entendres, and hidden meanings that are part of the island’s rich musical legacy from Africa and Spain. You don’t have to be Cuban, however, to let the passionate essence and fun of these rhythms infuse your being with pleasure.

Reviews

“…Cuban music is the product of a centuries-long fusion of African and Spanish elements….90 year old Isaac Oviedo one of the masters of the tres guitar (the central instrument of the son montuno), demonstrates the timeless pleasures of the son on a new Rounder recording (Routes of Rhythm, Vol.3) made in Havana during the production of the Harry Belafonte PBS series on Cuban music. Recorded live in Oviedo’s living room, the music has the delightful feel of a house party.” –Daisann McLane, Rolling Stone

“…At 90 years of age Isaac Oviedo can look back on a long and influential career, touted by just about everyone as the godfather of the tres guitar and country style son of Cuba. While it has ties to the popular African rhythms and call-and-response song structure, this Cuban music is just as influenced by the Spanish and gypsy traditions. What is presented here is a series of informal sessions with his family and friends playing bongs bass, maracas, tres and some wonderful vocals from Isaac and his son Ernesto. Because of their casual nature these sessions capture the feel of the music beautifully, and to pick out a favorite among the ballads, dances, and songs here is pointless. This is real roots music, blending cultures and ideas naturally, with no pretentions,, no gimmicks, capturing the spirit and joy of music made for its own sake.” –Dirty Linen, Baltimore Maryland
